Your Google Business Profile, set up right and kept in shape
Your Google Business Profile is the listing that shows on Google Maps, with your reviews, your photos and the call button. For most service businesses it is seen before the website is. We set it up the way Google asks for and keep it current.
Each part of the profile, what we do with it, and the Google rule that matters for it.
| What we do | What Google says | |
|---|---|---|
| Categories | Choose the main category that best describes your business, and only the extra ones that truly fit. | One primary category and up to ten in total. Pick what the business is, and use as few as possible. |
| Business name | Keep it as your real business name. | The name must match the one on your signs, website and paperwork. No added services, cities or slogans. |
| Service area | Set the cities and areas you actually serve, and hide your address if customers do not come to you. | Up to 20 service areas, set by city or postal code, within about two hours' drive of where you are based. |
| Services and description | List the services you offer and write a clear description of the business. | The description can be up to 750 characters. Services are chosen from Google's list or added by you. |
| Photos | Add real photos of your work, your crew and your trucks, and keep adding new ones. | Photos should be in focus, well lit and not heavily edited. |
| Hours | Keep your hours right, including holidays. | Special hours cover holidays without changing your regular hours. |
| Posts | Publish a new post on your profile every week. | Posts can be updates, offers or events. Posts older than six months are archived. |
| Review requests | Set up an automatic review request that goes to every customer after the job. | Asking is allowed. Paying or rewarding for reviews is not, and neither is asking only the happy customers. |
| Review replies | Reply to every review, good or bad. | Google advises short, professional replies, and honest ones to negative reviews. |
| Search terms | Read the searches people used to find you, and tune the profile for what they are looking for. | The performance report lists the search terms that showed your profile. |
It takes about two minutes, and you can undo it just as fast.
Your profile is too valuable to gamble with. These offers are common, and each one runs against something Google has published.
It happens to honest businesses, and it is stressful because Google rarely says exactly why. Here is the process Google publishes:
If this happens while we manage your profile, we handle the appeal for you. We tell you which documents we need, you send them, and we prepare and file the appeal. We have done this for clients several times.
Google makes the final decision, so we cannot promise that a profile will be reinstated, and nobody honestly can.

A profile has to be verified before it shows properly. Google decides which method you get: a phone call or text, an email, a recorded video, a live video call or a postcard. You cannot choose.
Many service businesses are asked for a video. Google wants to see three things in it: where you are (street signs or the outside of your location), the business itself (your tools, equipment or a branded vehicle) and proof you run it (for example unlocking your truck or your workspace).
This is the one step only you can do, because Google wants to see you at your business. For some owners it is quick, and for others it is stressful. We go through it with you: what to film, in what order, and what Google is looking for. Google says a review can take up to five business days.
